How do I turn on my hot water supply?
You will need to turn on the gas valve located generally at the bottom of the hot water system. The valve handle in picture below is in the off position. The valve handle should be in line with the pipe to be in the on position.

How can you tell if a gate valve is open or closed?
As the operator rotates the handle counterclockwise, the stem lifts out of the handle, opening the gate. A clockwise rotation of the gate moves the stem back into the gate and closes the valve. When the stem is no longer protruding beyond the handle, the gate valve is closed.

Usually it’s best to have them all the way on to get the volume you need. And the regulators should be directly after them on the same line if they are the main valve. Although they might have separate regulators for each unit which would be located right where they each branch off.
Do showers have shut off valves?
The shower valve is its own shutoff, and these valves tend to last for a decade or longer. In the meantime, any other shutoff valves can gum up or go bad, or worse, leak themselves. Also, showers need as much pressure as can be supplied, and many valves just slow that down except for ball valves.
How do I stop my hot water from flowing?
The mains water supply into the house can be turned off at the main stop cock or stop valve which is normally located under or near the kitchen sink. This will stop the mains water up to the stop cock. However if you have a cylinder for example, then remember you may also need to turn this off too (see below).

Inside the valve, there is a baffle with a water flow port running through it. The handle operates a plunger with some sort of washer or seal on the bottom. As the handle closes the valve, the plunger moves down against the water-flow port and partially closes it off.
